Ephesians 2:1-10
As we continue to read from the Letter to the Ephesians, we come to Ephesians 2:1-10. In our first reading, Ephesians 1:3-14, we heard the astonishing news that God predestined “all human history” and “everything in heaven and on earth” for perfection and fulfillment in Christ. We heard, in the context or our summer sermon series, that God has willed eternally that The Great Story ends well for us and for all creation.
This week, the focus is on God’s role in this wonderful Good News, and our role.
Read Ephesians 2:1-2 as a reiteration of our inescapable existential condition, trapped in the powers of sin and death.
Now read Ephesians 2:8-9 very carefully. If we cannot escape sin and death by our own will or virtue, how has God made escape possible for us?
Ephesians 2:10 tells us the “So what?” of grace. We are not saved for our own sakes, but to join God in “good works” in Christ. How have you experienced yourself as equipped for good works? Where do you still struggle?
