Deuteronomy. 26:1-11 / Luke. 4:1-13
For our first Sunday in the season of Lent, we read Deuteronomy 26:1-11 and Luke 4:1-13. One is the story of departing from privation and the other is the story of entering privation. Both serve the metaphor of Lent as journey through wilderness.
The offering called for in Deuteronomy 26:1-11 is a thank offering. Consider what it means to make a sacrifice to God out of thanks rather than as a way to try to influence God.
Why do you suppose there is such an emphasis on sharing the celebration of freedom and plenty with “the aliens who reside among you” (Deuteronomy 26:11)?
The story of Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness being tempted by the devil appears in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. In all three stories, we are told that the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be so tempted. Why? Think of a time when you have withstood temptation or trial. How did you feel? Now think of a time when you succumbed to temptation or trial. How did you feel? When did you feel the need of God more?
