Isaiah 53:1-6 / John 10:22-30

Again this week we read from Isaiah and John — Isaiah 53:1-6 and John 10:22-30.

The Isaiah reading is known as a Servant Song, proclaiming One whom God sends to lead the people to holiness. Take note of how this One is described in Isaiah 53:1-6. How does their resume fit your sense of a qualified leader?

In John 10:22-30, Jesus says there are two things that cause us to recognize him as God’s Messiah (the word Messiah means “anointed one”). These are hearing his voice (verse 27) and believing his works (verse 25).

Is your own experience of faith in Jesus based on hearing his voice? What does it mean to you to hear his voice?

Jesus then describes what results from hearing his voice and believing: “eternal life”, and the promise that “no one will snatch them out of my hand” (verse 27). What does “eternal life” mean to you? And does Jesus’ promise give you peace and reassurance?
